Welcome to the Angkor Experience

Hi, I’m Vandain.

I am the owner of the Angkor Experience, a tour guide agency in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

I started this business so that I can support my young family and show visitors to Siem Reap the magical place that is Angkor Wat.

Angkor Wat is a very special place to the Cambodian people, and I feel very privileged that I can not only guide visitors through the temples, but also that I can share the history and culture of the archaeological site.

There is so much history, art and architecture in our country, and I love to share my knowledge and also learn from visitors about their home country.

It would be my pleasure to be your guide during your time in Siem Reap and to show you the city where I have lived for most of my life.

A little more about me

I was born in the Banteay Meanchey province in the northeast of Cambodia and moved with my family to Siem Reap when I was 4 years old.  We moved to Siem Reap because my parents wanted to ensure all their children had a good education and could learn English.  I went to primary and high school in Siem Reap and I was very lucky that my parents worked very hard to support out family so that I, and my brothers and sisters could have the opportunity to learn.

When I was 12, I started to study English with the Buddhist monk at the Buddhist pagoda; Wat Dannak language School, Life and Hope Association.  There were volunteer teachers from countries like Australia, USA and England.

I studied for three hours per day from Monday to Saturday, but every Saturday I went to the class just for praying and meditation.  My English improved very much during this time. Let’s say that, Buddhist pagoda is a home of knowledge for Cambodian people.

My journey to becoming a licensed tour guide

In 2013, I started as a driver and a local tour guide for Siem Reap Quad Bike Adventure.  During my time as a guide, I learnt a lot from my older colleagues who have been tour guides for many years.  I have learnt many things regarding the history of our city, the culture, politics, sociology, and more.

In my free time I also enjoy reading many guidebooks (e.g., Lonely Planet, Ancient Angkor, Dawn Rooney, History of Cambodia, and Sacred Angkor of Hindu Mythology, etc.).

In 2016, I became an official English speaking tour guide and I’m accredited by the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism.  To get your tour guide license, you must study very hard and then pass the exams and presentation.  I worked very hard for this honour and I’m very proud of my English and my knowledge of Siem Reap and Angkor Wat.
